Norwegian police arrested on Friday an Italian tourist who crossed the border into Russia, and then back again.

The man, who is in his 50s, was later released but with a fine of 12,000 Norwegian kroner for his attempt to walk a few metres into Russia.

He admitted to crossing the border and was fined. He only went a short distance over the border, says police officer Einride Hals to VG.

Norway and Finland have only one open border crossing, at Storskog, a crossing the Italian tourist was nowhere near.

The man is free to continue staying in Norway, according to the police.
