USA's former President Donald Trump was shot in the ear during an election rally, in what the FBI considers an assassination attempt.

Two people, the suspected shooter, a 20-year-old from Pennsylvania, and a person in the audience, died in the shooting.

Donald Trump himself writes in a post on social media that the bullet hit him in the upper part of his right ear.

"I immediately understood that something was wrong when I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and directly felt the bullet penetrate the skin," he writes.

Trump also writes that it is astonishing that such a deed can occur in the USA and thanks for the swift response from the police and security service.

"Above all, I want to express my condolences to the family of the person who was killed at the meeting, and also to the family of another person who was seriously injured."

The White House announces that President Joe Biden has spoken with Trump after the shooting. Trump has announced that he is doing well and looks forward to the Republican Convention next week, where he is expected to be nominated as the party's presidential candidate.

Ducking and Screaming

Donald Trump was in Butler, Pennsylvania, for an election rally before the autumn's presidential election when the shooting occurred.

In video clips, Trump is seen standing on stage and speaking to an audience when he suddenly jerks and raises a hand to his head as loud bangs are heard.

The audience behind him throws themselves to the ground and screams.

Bodyguards then rush forward towards Trump, who ducks behind his lectern. A few seconds later, Trump gets up again and raises a fist in the air. He appears to be bleeding from one ear but can walk off the stage and towards a waiting car that drives away.

At Least Two Dead

At least two people are dead after the incident, one of them the suspected shooter and the other a spectator in the audience. Two more people were seriously injured in the shooting.

The FBI confirms that the deed is being investigated as an assassination attempt on Donald Trump – but that no clear motive has been found yet.

At a press conference in Butler, FBI investigator Kevin Rojek says that the shooter has been preliminarily identified as a 20-year-old from Pennsylvania, but that it is too early to release details.

We have no reason to believe that there are more threats out there, says Rojek.

Sources tell ABC that the shooter was a man and that he fired with a powerful automatic rifle from a roof of a building adjacent to the area of the election rally.

An eyewitness tells BBC that he alerted the police to an armed man he saw crawling up onto the roof when Trump had begun speaking.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the man was then shot dead by snipers, who were on site to maintain security at the meeting.
