Trading on the New York Stock Exchange was volatile after Wednesday's stock market fall. Several of the major technology companies also fell during Thursday's trading.

The Dow Jones industrial index rose 0.2 percent, while the broad S&P 500 index fell 0.5 percent and the technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index dropped 0.9 percent.

On the plus side, a report showed that the US economy grew more than expected during the second quarter of the year.

However, there was still uncertainty surrounding the major technology giants that fell sharply on Wednesday. Electric car manufacturer Tesla rose 2.0 percent. But semiconductor giant Nvidia fell 1.7 percent and Microsoft fell back 2.5 percent.

Google's parent company Alphabet was only a few tenths of a percent down earlier in the trading day when Open AI announced that the company had begun working on its own search engine. Alphabet immediately fell around 2 percent. The stock closed 3.1 percent down in the end.

Computer giant IBM rose 4.3 percent after the company presented higher revenue and profit in its latest quarterly report than expected.
