An unexpectedly positive report on the state of the American labor market delighted stock speculators in New York. The three leading indexes on Wall Street rose on the last day of the trading week, the broad S&P 500 index by 0.9 percent, the Dow Jones industrial index by 0.8 percent, and the Nasdaq's technology-heavy composite index by 1.2 percent.

Among the winners were primarily companies that benefit the most from a generally strong economy, including cruise companies and banks. Norwegian Cruise rose 4.9 percent, while giant banks JP Morgan Chase and Bank of America increased 3.6 and 2.2 percent, respectively.

Thanks to Friday's rise, Wall Street recovered from the declines earlier in the week. For the week as a whole, the S&P 500 index rose 0.2 percent, while both the Dow Jones and Nasdaq increased marginally by 0.1 percent.
