This has been called "USA's most banned book". Now Maia Kobabe's "Gender Queer" has been released in Swedish, writes SVT.

The graphic novel depicts the author's upbringing in northern California and deals with how they explore their identity and then come out as asexual and non-binary.

The book, which was published in 2019, has been awarded an Alex Award in the category of best book for young adults, among other things. However, it has also been criticized by politicians and banned in schools in, among other places, Florida and Texas.

For three years, "Gender Queer" has topped the American Library Association's list of the most banned books in the country – a list where several of the titles contain themes related to LGBTQI. The list ranks the books that are most exposed to attempts to be removed or banned.

In an interview with SVT, the Swedish translator My Bergström says she believes it is the positive depiction of LGBTQI experiences that provokes.

“Gender Queer” shows how well it can go if you have a good family that listens and understands, she says to SVT.
