The gruesome images were cabled around the world.

Hungarian Barnabas Varga was knocked unconscious in Sunday evening's European Championship drama against Scotland.

It is now clear that Varga suffered multiple facial fractures and is likely to require operations.

TV viewers around the world and the crowd in Stuttgart followed the scenes in Scotland's penalty area at the end of the match with great concern.

Varga fell to the ground after a collision with Scotland's goalkeeper Angus Gunn and suffered spasms. Teammates rushed to his side and laid him on his side while calling for medical personnel.

Varga quickly received medical attention, with blankets held over him and rescue personnel in attendance. It was only after several minutes that Varga was carried out on a stretcher for further transportation to hospital.

According to the Hungarian Football Association, Varga suffered multiple fractures to his face and was also knocked unconscious after the collision with Gunn.

It is highly likely that he will undergo surgery for his injuries in the near future.

He will also not play any further part in the European Championship.

Hungary won the highly dramatic final group match 1–0. The decisive goal did not come until the tenth minute of added time, when Kevin Csoboth scored the winner.

It was terrible, terrible to see Barnabas in that state. We wanted to win for his sake and we dedicate the victory to him, says teammate Roland Sallai to news agency AFP.

With the win, Hungary has the chance to advance to the round of 16 as one of the four best third-placed teams. Germany won Group A ahead of Switzerland and both are through to the next stage of the tournament.
