Jannik Sinner withdraws from next week's ATP tournament in Båstad on the advice of doctors.

The 22-year-old Italian world number one is exhausted after Wimbledon.

"I'm sorry", writes the 22-year-old.

The men's week in Båstad tennis has a star-studded starting field. But on Wednesday, the field became one profile poorer.

Italian Jannik Sinner, who was eliminated from Wimbledon on Tuesday after a five-setter in the quarterfinals against Russian world number five Daniil Medvedev, withdraws from the tournament due to exhaustion.

"I'm sorry to have to withdraw from Båstad next week due to fatigue. It's never an easy decision, since I love playing. But my team and doctors have advised me that the best thing is to take time for rest and recovery", writes Jannik Sinner in an Instagram post.

Båstad's tournament director Christer Hult understands the decision made since Sinner has played several long matches in a short time during Wimbledon.

"I spoke with Jannik and the team this afternoon. The message is of course sad for him and for all tennis fans", says Hult on the ATP tournament's website.

Spanish legend Rafael Nadal and Norwegian world number eight Casper Ruud are now the big names ahead of the men's week, which begins on Monday.
