Israel orders 250,000 Palestinians to leave southern Gaza.

At the same time, the UN's humanitarian coordinator for Gaza reports that 1.9 million people are now on the run in the territory.

Tuesday night, Israel carried out several rocket attacks in and around the city of Khan Yunis in southern Gaza. Nine people were killed and around 30 injured, according to the Hamas-controlled health authority.

Prior to the attacks, Israel ordered the evacuation of civilians from parts of Khan Yunis and Rafah. According to the UN, this affects 250,000 people.

We have seen people moving, families moving, people starting to pack their belongings and trying to leave this area, says Louise Wateridge of the UN's Palestine agency Unrwa.

Evacuated people have been told to seek shelter in extensive, already overcrowded, tent camps along the coast.

The attacks on Khan Yunis come after a large number of rockets were fired at southern Israel from the area. The armed wing of the Islamic Jihad, al-Quds, has taken responsibility for the rocket fire.

In total, 1.9 million people are now on the run in Gaza, according to the UN's humanitarian coordinator for Gaza Sigrid Kaag.

I am deeply concerned about reports of new evacuation orders issued in the Khan Yunis area, she said before the UN Security Council, adding that new routes into Gaza are necessary to avert a humanitarian catastrophe.
