Authorities in the USA have received tips about an Iranian plan to kill presidential candidate Donald Trump, according to sources for CNN and the news agency AP.

According to CNN, the American security service Secret Service raised the security level around Trump after authorities received the tip about Iran's murder plans from a source.

There is nothing to suggest that the plans have anything to do with Saturday's assassination attempt on the former president.

But the information raises new questions about how security was handled during the campaign meeting in Butler, Pennsylvania, over the weekend when a 20-year-old man opened fire on Trump, writes the news channel.

Tough on Iran

It has not been established whether the Iranian murder plot was shared with Trump's campaign staff. The campaign staff refuses to comment on CNN's information.

In a statement on Sunday, Secret Service announced that the security service had recently "added protection resources and functions" around Trump.

Donald Trump drove a hard line against the Islamic Republic of Iran during his time in the White House, including by revoking the nuclear energy agreement and re-imposing sanctions against the dictatorship. It was also on Trump's orders that the US carried out the attack in Baghdad that killed the high-ranking General Qassem Soleimani, something Iran has sworn to avenge.

Highest Priority

According to Adrienne Watson, spokesperson for the US National Security Council, the threats from Iran against Trump are related to Soleimani's death, something that authorities have been monitoring since Trump was president.

We see this as a national security issue of the highest priority, she tells AP.

Iran has on several occasions tried to kill opponents and individuals abroad who they consider to be enemies of the state.
