Armed groups have taken over a popular seaside resort in western Myanmar. In the north, attacks on the junta began on Tuesday morning, according to a military source and residents.
Fighting is raging in several parts of Myanmar where armed groups are battling the military, which seized power in a coup in 2021.
The separatist Arakan Army (AA) has been fighting security forces in the western part of Rakhine State, around Ngapali Beach, where many exclusive hotels and holiday resorts owned by military-backed companies are located. Junta soldiers and police have reportedly withdrawn to an airport in the town of Thandwe a few kilometres away, according to a military source for AFP.
A resident says the town is almost deserted.
Tens of miles away, in Shan State, the Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) has launched dawn attacks on the military in the town of Kyaukme, according to reports from the group and residents.
