Demonstrators have again clashed with police in Kenya's capital Nairobi – despite the president's withdrawal of the controversial bill and promise of peaceful protests.

Scattered confrontations between police and demonstrators in Nairobi were seen on Tuesday afternoon in the form of stone-throwing men and tear gas-using police.

"Idiots have infiltrated", writes one of the demonstration organizers, Hanifa Adan, on X.

In other parts of the country – including Mombasa, Nakuru, and Kisumu – crowds gathered for peaceful demonstrations.

We promised a peaceful protest and that's what we've done, but (President William) Ruto must go, says a person who participated in a peaceful march in Kisumu.

The protests began two weeks ago in protest against soaring living costs and an unpopular tax increase. The resistance has largely been led by young Kenyans.

The tax increase was voted through despite opposition, which led to massive protests last Tuesday with at least 30 dead since the military was called in to help the police.

After the deadly demonstrations, Ruto promised to withdraw the increase.

The people have spoken, said the president at a press conference.
