Believers in Asatru can get their own burial ground in Karlstad diocese.
In 2023, the Nordic Asa Society applied for a special burial ground for believers in Asatru to be established in Karlstad diocese. Karlstad parish has now proposed to the County Administrative Board that the burial ground should be established just outside Nyeds cemetery in Molkom.
The Church of Sweden has a government mandate to provide special burial grounds to different faith communities that apply for it, according to the burial law.
It's not a separate cemetery or so, but it's special burial grounds specifically for believers in Asatru, says Elna Forsberg, cemetery manager at Karlstad parish to Nya Wermlands-Tidningen.
The burial ground will be located just outside the current cemetery since the Asa Society wishes a burial ground that is not located in consecrated ground. If the proposal is approved by the County Administrative Board, this will become Sweden's first modern burial ground for believers in Asatru.
