Josephine Bornebusch directed three of the seven episodes of the Netflix series "Baby Reindeer", which deals with topics such as stalking and sexual abuse.
When the acclaimed drama series won six prizes at the American Emmy Awards in September, the Swedish director was present in Los Angeles.
But the success came unexpectedly.
I had done "Släpp taget" and "Solsidan" in between, and suddenly the viewer numbers started ticking in – and it started breaking records. Then you think: "what's happening?". That series, I had almost forgotten that we had made, she says and laughs.
Family Drama
Bornebusch's new film "Släpp taget" is about a family in disintegration. The man Gustav (Pål Sverre Hagen) is unfaithful and wants to divorce, but his wife Stella (Josephine Bornebusch) wants to keep the family together.
Bornebusch had previously created and played the lead role in the Viaplay series "Älska mig". That series was also a family drama and has a similar tone, which seems like a thought.
I think maybe you dig a little where you stand. I come from a big family myself. My husband has an extremely large family. I surround myself quite a lot with families. And it's very interesting with dynamics in families and relationships, she says.
In addition to playing the lead role, she is also the director and has written the script.
I hadn't initially thought of playing the role myself. But then it became so. And when I had decided to do it, then I regretted it, she says smiling.
"Solsidan" Next
She describes it as the most difficult thing she has done as an actress since the character Stella has so many layers.
It was insanely difficult.
But despite the success of "Baby Reindeer", there will be no move to Hollywood for an international breakthrough. Instead, the filming of two new seasons of "Solsidan" awaits next year.
I'll continue at my own pace, so we'll see what happens.
Josephine Bornebusch has achieved successes as both an actress and director. She doesn't want to choose one over the other.
I hope you can be both. I think it's incredibly fun to direct and write. But acting is also very fun. I want to do everything.
"Släpp taget" premieres on Netflix on November 1.
