It is not only in Stockholm that the opera house needs a comprehensive facelift. Even Paris' historic opera house, Palais Garnier, will close its doors from the middle of 2027 for a two-year renovation.
Paris' second and much newer opera house, Opéra Bastille, which was inaugurated in 1989, will also undergo a renovation starting in 2030.
The cost of the dual renovation of the two opera palaces is estimated by France's highest state audit authority, the Audit Court, to at least 200 million euros, according to a report published last week.
Both opera houses need modernization of their stage infrastructure. According to the report, the buildings have aged and suffered from long-term underfunding.
