The medieval execution site Galgen in Visby, Härkeberga church outside Enköping, and Feskekörka in Gothenburg are three of the total 430 cultural heritage sites that the National Heritage Board – so far – has designated as particularly worthy of protection in the event of war, reports Magasin K.
The war in Ukraine and the changed security situation have prompted the county administrative boards to prioritize the selection process – a task that has actually existed since the 1990s.
The cultural heritage sites are to be marked with a special blue and white shield, which means that they may not be destroyed according to the Hague Convention, reports Magasin K. It is the county administrative boards that are responsible for making the selection, in consultation with, among others, property owners and the Defense Forces.
It may take time, but we believe that a few more will receive permits before the end of the year, says Agnes Norberg at the National Heritage Board to Magasin K.
In 2022, only Gotland had submitted an application, but now an additional 8 county administrative boards have followed suit.
