Several buildings, including a police station and a town hall, were set on fire in New Caledonia on Sunday night local time as the French territory was once again hit by unrest.

According to a press release from the High Commissioner, who represents the French state in the archipelago, the unrest was reported on the main island and two smaller adjacent islands. As a result, several schools will remain closed on Monday.

Last week, seven separatists – including Christian Tein, leader of the independence group CCAT – were flown from the Pacific island group to the French mainland, where they will be held in custody awaiting trial.

The group is accused of organising and inciting the riots that broke out in the French territory in May. The riots occurred when the National Assembly in Paris was about to introduce new rules for which of New Caledonia's inhabitants would be eligible to vote.

Nine people, including two police officers, were killed and hundreds injured in the May unrest.
