Drama beyond the gold battle – this is how the Allsvenskan is decided

Malmö FF becomes Swedish champions for the 24th time on Saturday. Or maybe on Sunday. Or possibly a little later in the autumn. There is still plenty of drama in the final stretch of the football Allsvenskan.

The gold favorite from Skåne seems to fulfill the heavy favorite role and win another Swedish Championship gold. A victory away against bottom-placed Västerås on Saturday would mean that Malmö FF has secured Lennart Johansson's trophy also in theory, with three rounds left to play.

Even a draw can be enough to secure the gold already this weekend. But then, Hammarby and Djurgården need to draw in Sunday's Stockholm derby.

So, what's there to get excited about when the men's Allsvenskan in football enters the final stretch?

A lot, actually.

+ The battle for Stockholm – and European spots.

Hammarby (47 points), Djurgården (47), and AIK (45) are in the driver's seat to compete for the two remaining European spots behind MFF. Sunday's derby at Tele2 Arena between Hammarby and Djurgården will therefore be extremely hot in the battle for top placements. AIK will simultaneously travel to the West Coast to take on IFK Göteborg on Monday.

All three Stockholm teams can actually reach Europe. The winner of the Swedish Cup 2025 will get a spot in the Europa League qualifiers, and if MFF takes the double, the cup spot will instead go to the Allsvenskan runner-up, which means the fourth-placed team will qualify for the Conference League.

Mjällby (42 points) and Elfsborg (41) will also want to have a say in the game with four rounds left to play.

+ The top scorer battle – an unexpected name tops

Brommapojkarna seem to be landing in the middle of the table, with plenty of air down to the relegation battle. They have not least Nikola Vasic to thank for that. The 33-year-old striker has late in his career gotten his big breakthrough and is having a brilliant season, surprisingly topping the top scorer list with 17 goals.

Several clubs are rumored to be interested in recruiting Vasic, who is only threatened in the top scorer spot by Malmö's Isaac Kiese Thelin (15).

+ Can IFK Göteborg breathe a sigh of relief?

Crisis headlines have been rampant regarding IFK Göteborg this season. But two straight wins seem to have taken the classic "Blåvitt" away from the acute relegation threat – six points separate them from Halmstad on the qualifying spot with four matches left.

Halmstad (24 points) will simultaneously try to keep Kalmar FF (23) and Västerås (19) behind them to stay clear. Just above the line, neither Värnamo (26) nor IFK Norrköping (27) can afford to relax.

Corrected: An earlier version had the wrong number of Swedish Championship golds for Malmö. The correct number is that MFF can take their 24th gold.
