Criticism of the European Championship schedule – all-Swedish quarterfinal awaits

The table tennis player Linda Bergström was emotional after the European Championship elimination in the singles tournament. Afterwards, the Swede directs criticism towards the game schedule. In my opinion, it's not possible to play this tournament in four days, says the 29-year-old. In the men's tournament, an all-Swedish quarterfinal awaits – Truls Möregårdh against Anton Källberg.

It was a thrilling match when Bergström (ranked as number 51 in the world) took on European number two and world number five Bernadette Szocz in the round of 16 of the European Championship.

The Swede has not lost to the Romanian in several years, but now suffered a tough defeat with 2–4 in sets.

Criticism of the schedule

I'm most angry, actually. Ugh. I should win this match, but my body can't handle it and then it's hard to keep up for seven sets, says Bergström to SVT.

Earlier on Saturday, she was eliminated in the quarterfinals with Stina Källberg in the doubles tournament and she has also played in mixed doubles with Mattias Falck (eliminated on Thursday). The main tournament in Austrian Linz will be decided on Thursday to Sunday, but Bergström and Falck, for example, also played qualifying matches in mixed doubles on Tuesday and Wednesday.

It is what it is and you know about the schedule beforehand. Then you have to take a stand on whether you want to play everything. You obviously want to play all classes, because you want to give yourself a chance in as many classes as possible.

Bergström – who played in the Olympic Games last summer – says that she has not been able to train as she wants to over the past six months.

"Last chance"

It's tough. With this draw, it was still my best chance of a medal in a long time and it was maybe my last chance, I don't know. We'll see, there are two years until the next (European Championship) and we'll see if I'm there then, says the Swede with tears in her eyes.

It's also over for Stina Källberg. The Swede lost the round of 16 to home player Sofia Polcanova – ranked as 14th in the world – with 0–4 in sets.

Big brother Anton Källberg impressed in his round of 16. He forced a seventh and decisive set against Slovenian Darko Jorgic and saved three match points before he himself decided the match 13–11 and 4–3 in sets.

Now a Swedish quarterfinal awaits this evening. Truls Möregårdh beat Frenchman Thibault Poret with 4–1 in sets and now Källberg awaits in the quarterfinals.
