A Russian professor at Estonia's most prestigious university has been sentenced to six years and three months in prison, accused of spying for Russia's sake.

The man, who worked at the University of Tartu, has, according to the verdict, collected sensitive information about Estonian defence and security policy and Estonia's relations with EU and Nato allies.

According to Estonian authorities, the man was recruited by Russian intelligence services several years ago. He is said to have had regular meetings in his homeland where the collected information was handed over.

Estonia has seen an increase in sabotage, digital warfare, and espionage in recent times, which the government in Tallinn has accused Moscow of being behind.

In May, Prime Minister Kaja Kallas claimed that Russia was waging a "shadow war" against the West and called for tougher action against Moscow.
