Georgia's ruling party proposes new legislation that would ban what they call "HBTQI propaganda" – another law drawing parallels to repressive Russian laws.

The proposal comes shortly after the controversial "agent law" took effect, following extensive domestic protests. The law is seen as a step away from the EU and closer to Russia.

According to Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili, the new HBTQI law will "protect minors and family values".

The proposal aims to limit "propaganda for same-sex relationships and incest" in educational institutions and TV broadcasts, Papuashvili said.

Parliament will vote on the proposal this month in a first reading.

Russia adopted a similar legislation over a decade ago and banned promoting "non-traditional" relationships to children. In 2022, the country further tightened its HBTQI laws.
