Georgia's President Salomé Zurabisjvili has turned to the country's constitutional court in the hope of repealing the controversial so-called "agent law".

The law was adopted in May after weeks of extensive street protests, and implies that organizations receiving more than one fifth of their funding from abroad must register with the authorities.

Georgia is currently a candidate for EU membership, but the new law is considered incompatible with joining the union.

President Salome Zurabishvili believes that the law contradicts the country's constitution and refers to a letter requiring authorities to take measures to integrate into the EU. The law was driven through by the ruling party Georgian Dream, and the president has previously tried to stop the law with the help of a veto.
