Germany is considering allowing deportations to Afghanistan after an Afghan asylum seeker killed a police officer and injured five others.

Deportations to Afghanistan were halted since the Taliban regained power in 2021. This may now change.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser says that for several months, they have been examining the possibility of allowing the deportation of serious offenders and dangerous individuals to both Syria and Afghanistan.

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, however, emphasizes that Germany does not have an embassy in place that can coordinate the deportations.

The discussion on deportations has been revived since a 25-year-old Afghan man was accused of attacking a police officer with a knife at a town square in Mannheim in southwestern Germany.

The violent attack is suspected to have a jihadist motive.
