Hundreds of people were evacuated from a hotel in Cairns, northeastern Australia, when a helicopter crashed into the building.

The time was just before 2 am, local time, when the helicopter crashed into the hotel in the popular tourist resort. A fire broke out in the building's roof and broken pieces of a rotor blade landed in the pool.

The pilot died in connection with the crash and two people who were on the ground were injured and taken to hospital. The two injured are reported to be in a stable condition, according to the police.

"The pilot, who was the only person in the helicopter, was declared dead at the scene. Forensic investigations are ongoing to formally identify the person," the police in the state of Queensland said in a statement.

Caitlin Denning, head of the ambulance in Queensland, says that the helicopter's rotor blade had come loose.

One landed on Cairns esplanade and the other, which had caught fire, in the hotel's pool on the ground floor, she tells local media.
