At least 30 people were killed during the protests in Kenya on Tuesday, reports the human rights organization Human Rights Watch (HRW). The information is based on witness accounts, public information, and documents from hospitals and morgues.
"Kenyan security forces fired directly at the demonstrators on June 25, 2024, even at those who were fleeing," writes HRW.
President William Ruto withdrew the tax increase bill that was the subject of the protests. Despite this, demonstrators gathered again on Thursday, including in the capital Nairobi, although on a smaller scale. Even then, they were met with police tear gas and rubber bullets, but no deaths have been reported.
