The International Monetary Fund (IMF) board has approved a payment to Ukraine of 1.1 billion dollars, equivalent to approximately 11.6 billion kronor, to serve as budget support in the war-torn country.

The payment is the latest phase of a loan package of over 15 billion dollars approved last year.

"Russia's war in Ukraine continues to impose a devastating social and economic burden on Ukraine," says IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva in a statement.

According to the IMF, Ukraine has met all relevant targets, and the country's economy has been "more resilient than expected in the first half of the year", reinforced by significant external support.

At the same time, the currency fund warns that prospects for the end of next year have deteriorated "largely due to ongoing Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure and uncertainty about the war".
