Former astronaut William Anders, who took a legendary picture of the Earth while circling the moon, has died at the age of 90 after crashing his plane, confirmed his son.
No one else was on board the plane when it crashed in the state of Washington on Friday.
The "Earthrise" picture taken by Anders as part of the Apollo 8 crew – where he, along with Frank Borman and Jim Lovell, became the first humans to leave the Earth's immediate vicinity in 1968. He and the others were struck by how small and fragile the Earth looked from a distance.
The expedition's transmissions set new TV viewing records worldwide.
In March 2022, the original photograph was sold at an auction in Copenhagen, where the final bid landed at €11,800.
