At least ten people, including a nine-month-old baby, drowned when a boat carrying migrants capsized on the Drina River between Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Serbian police were alerted to the accident by their colleagues in Bosnia early on Thursday morning. Initially, it was reported that 18 of the 25 people on board had managed to reach land in Bosnia.

Later, Serbia's Interior Minister Ivica Dacić stated that at least ten people had died, suggesting that there may have been more on board the ill-fated boat.

In a statement, Dacić said that police and rescue services continued to search the Drina River and surrounding terrain for more victims.

Serbia is one of the primary transit countries for the "Balkan route", where many migrants try to enter the EU. Over one million people have, according to the Serbian government, passed through Serbia from Asia and Africa since the refugee crisis in 2015.
