Tokyo, Japan's capital, is launching its own dating app this summer as part of the government's efforts to boost the country's record-low national fertility rate.
Users of the app will need to submit documentation proving they are single and write a statement declaring their willingness to get married. They will also be interviewed.
It is common for Japanese dating apps to ask about income, but Tokyo will also require a tax return to verify annual income.
On social media, many have expressed skepticism – "Is this really what the government should be doing with tax money?".
Others are writing that they are positive about testing it out.
Japan's fertility rate fell to a record low in 2023, and the country registered more than twice as many deaths as births.
