Nigerian security forces have used tear gas and water cannons and fired shots at demonstrators gathered in several cities, including Kano and the capital Abuja. In several states, authorities have imposed a curfew around the clock to stop the protest movement. Over 300 people have been arrested, according to the country's police authority.

Many Nigerians are struggling with high living costs – inflation is at 40 percent – and are having a hard time making ends meet. An online campaign with the hashtag #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria has prompted large numbers of Nigerians to take to the streets and protest against the government's policies.

With over 220 million inhabitants, Nigeria is the world's sixth most populous country.
