A heatwave has gripped parts of India. At least 33 workers who were on duty in the seventh and final phase of voting in the country's marathon election died due to the heat.

According to Navdeep Rinwa, who oversees the election in Uttar Pradesh, the families of the deceased will receive economic compensation.

The temperature in the state reached 46.9 degrees Celsius on Saturday, according to the weather agency IMD.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to be re-elected for a third term, but the official result is expected only on Tuesday.

One of Modi's main challengers, Arvind Kejriwal, who is the chief minister of Delhi and the leader of the opposition party Aam Aadmi, was released on bail to participate in the election campaign. He has been imprisoned since March after being accused of corruption in a case that has become a symbol for many of Modi's authoritarian tendencies.

Now that the election is over, Kejriwal will return to prison, he himself announced on Sunday.
