Pehrson Opens Up to a Total Profit Ban for Independent Schools

The Minister of Education and the leader of The Liberals, Johan Pehrson, no longer rules out a total ban on profit-driven independent schools – if other measures do not help.

I Ekot's Saturday interview says Pehrson that a profit ban would be a last resort if planned reforms to limit profit extraction do not suffice.

I am convinced that the reform agenda we now have for the Swedish knowledge school will take us very, very far, but I have said that I do not rule out anything and I stand by that, he says to Ekot.

The party's stance has been that profit extraction is not a fundamental problem, as long as independent schools maintain good quality. But in an interview with Svenska Dagbladet last week, he opened up for a total ban, which he now repeats.

In the Saturday interview, Pehrson points to problems that have built up over many years, caused by the municipalization of schools, the introduction of goal-oriented governance, and the independent school reform.

It is clear that this cocktail became toxic for the school and the knowledge mission, and led to us moving away from what was once perhaps a world-class school to not being that.
