A police officer who was attacked by a knife-wielding man on a square in Mannheim, Germany, has died of his injuries.

The officer was one of six people who were attacked.

The motive has not yet been established – but among the injured was a well-known Islam critic who had participated in a political meeting with an anti-Islam organization when the attacker struck. The other injured individuals also belong to the same anti-Islam organization.

The 29-year-old police officer was stabbed multiple times in the head while trying to intervene in the attack. He was taken to an acute operation and put into a coma, but died of his injuries on Sunday.

The attacker, a 25-year-old man, was shot by police and arrested afterwards.

Several politicians have expressed condolences over the incident and raised the question of whether it could be a political act with Islamist motives.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz says he is deeply saddened by the death, as a result of the "terrifying attack".

"His dedication to the safety of all deserves the highest recognition," he writes on X.
