Human Rights Watch accuses Israel of using white phosphorus in attacks in southern Lebanon. It causes damage to both civilians and the environment, according to the human rights organization.

"Israel's widespread use of white phosphorus in southern Lebanon exposes civilians to severe risk and contributes to their displacement", writes Human Rights Watch in a report.

The organization says it has "verified that Israeli forces have used white phosphorus ammunition in at least 17 municipalities in southern Lebanon since October", including five where it was "illegally used over populated residential areas".

Israel's army said in October that the rules require that shells with white phosphorus "are not used in densely populated areas, except for certain exceptions".

Since the terrorist-stamped Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, which triggered the Gaza War, there has been almost daily shelling between Israeli military and Lebanese Hezbollah, which is allied with Hamas.

Even human rights organization Amnesty International has accused Israel of illegally using white phosphorus in southern Lebanon.

White phosphorus is flammable and phosphorus may not be used as a weapon according to the laws of war.
