Russia is demanding that the woman arrested in Denmark on suspicion of espionage be released immediately. The demand is being made by Maria Zacharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, in a statement on Wednesday.

The woman, a Russian citizen, is suspected of facilitating Russian espionage. She runs a consultancy firm for Russian speakers in a town on Zealand and has allegedly received money from a Russian state fund over several years, according to reports from the Danish public service broadcaster DR.

Russia is calling the arrest "persecution". Zacharova states in the Russian statement that there is no evidence that the woman has engaged in criminal activity, and claims that individuals with pro-Russian views are being targeted in Denmark.

The Danish intelligence service said on Tuesday that the woman is likely to be released after questioning, but that "the case is still under investigation".
