The Russian-American journalist Alsu Kurmasheva, who was arrested in Russia in October, has been sentenced to 6.5 years in prison, accused of spreading false information about Russian military activities.

Kurmasheva, who works for the US-financed Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, was arrested in October last year, accused of, among other things, failing to register as a "foreign agent" with the Russian authorities.

The trial was held behind closed doors in the highest court in the republic of Tatarstan. Her employer calls the verdict a "parody of justice".

Alsu Kurmasheva was arrested about half a year after her colleague, The Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was sentenced to 16 years in prison on Friday.
