According to the verdict, Ryanair has violated consumer rights by deliberately misleading consumers to underestimate the price of the flight. Ryanair has also been ordered to refund fees charged to passengers.

Fees related to larger cabin bags have become increasingly common among European airlines – despite the bags having standard dimensions (55x40x20 centimeters).

The only bag often allowed to be brought along is a smaller one that fits under the seat. However, according to the court in Portugal, hand luggage is an essential part of the transport agreement and forcing passengers to pay for an extra service breaks the rules.

Earlier, Ryanair – together with EasyJet, Vueling, and Volotea – was fined by Spain's department responsible for consumer affairs for unfair fees related to hand luggage.

It is currently unclear to what extent the verdict in Portugal will affect Swedish travelers.
