The number of young people sentenced to closed youth care has tripled in a year and a half. This has put pressure on the National Board of Institutions (Sis) to find room for everyone.
Therefore, the authority is now converting three youth homes where young people are placed by social services according to the Care of Young Persons Act (LVU). Sis writes in a press release that it concerns the youth homes Klarälvsgården, Råby, and Sundbo.
"We are in a situation where more and more are being sentenced to closed youth care, with increasingly longer sentences as crime has become more serious. It is a priority that young people who are sentenced for crimes serve their sentences promptly," says Youth Care Director Birgitta Dahlberg at Sis in a comment.
The conversion provides an additional 50 places.
According to Sis, more than 50 young people were serving closed youth care sentences on January 1, 2023. Currently, the number has increased to 177 young people.
