Spain is going to join South Africa's goal in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague against Israel.

Spain's Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares announces this, reported by several Spanish media outlets.

He adds that Spain will support the decision made by the court and emphasizes that the country will not comment on the crime itself.

Earlier, Mexico, Colombia, Nicaragua, Libya, and the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank have asked to join ICJ's goal.

Spain becomes the first European country to do so. However, Ireland and Belgium also intend to join the goal in the future, writes El País.

South Africa has accused Israel of violating the genocide convention. Last week, ICJ decided that Israel must immediately cease military operations in Rafah in Gaza.

The court's decision has been described by Israel as "unfounded, scandalous, and repulsive".

The statement from Albares comes a week after Spain, Ireland, and Norway recognized the state of Palestine. On Tuesday, Slovenia's parliament also voted to approve a Palestinian state.
