The leader of the Sudanese paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) – which has been fighting against the Sudanese army for over a year – welcomes the invitation to talks about a ceasefire.

"I announce our participation in the upcoming talks about a ceasefire on August 14, 2024, in Switzerland", writes Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, the leader of RSF, on X.

The peace talks will be led by the USA and Saudi Arabia, with several other countries as observers.

"The USA remains firmly committed to cooperating with partners to bring an end to this devastating war", says US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in a statement.

The fighting in Sudan broke out in April 2023 when the previously cooperating parties in the army and RSF clashed. The war has led to tens of thousands of people dying and millions being forced to flee their homes.

Both sides have been accused of brutal war crimes, including deliberately targeting civilians, indiscriminately shelling residential areas, and blocking humanitarian aid.

Several previous mediation attempts to end the conflict have failed.
