The Opposition Wants to See Protests Around the World

Venezuela's opposition is calling for protests around the world on August 17, to show support for the victory they claim to have won in the country's disputed presidential election.

Let's scream together so that the world recognizes our victory, the truth and the people's sovereignty, says opposition leader Maria Corina Machado in a video on social media.

Even Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, who is the opposition's presidential candidate after Machado was barred from running, says "we'll see you on the 17th".

Both opposition leaders have been in hiding for over a week, feeling threatened by the regime.

The Election Commission in the country, which is close to the sitting President Nicolas Maduro, has officially declared that he won the election. But according to the opposition, protocols collected directly from over 80 percent of the polling stations show that their candidate won big, with two-thirds of the votes.

Several countries around the world have criticized the election and demanded that Venezuela present a detailed and verifiable election result – something the regime has refused.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) says in a statement that they are "actively monitoring" the development in Venezuela, where security forces are cracking down on the opposition.

Now the country's highest court – which is described by critics and the opposition as loyal to Maduro – will decide the matter.
