The search for the hundreds of people feared to have died in the catastrophic landslide in Papua New Guinea is coming to an end.

The area is deemed too dangerous to search in.

Neither authorities nor residents will be allowed to enter the landslide site until it is deemed safe again.

The landslide occurred early in the morning of May 24 in Yambali on the highlands of Papua New Guinea's main island. A large number of houses were buried along with the people who were sleeping in them.

Initially, the government reported that as many as 2,000 people could have been buried in the landslide, but according to Joe Aku, the figure is likely around 650. Only nine bodies have been found, reports the local health authorities.

According to Joe Aku, plans are being discussed for a possible memorial service for those who died in the landslide.
