This year, Sweden's Riksdag politicians chose to submit 3,178 motions – which is more than the last two years. However, very few of them lead to law or regulatory changes, most are set aside.
Every year after the Riksdag's opening in the autumn, Riksdag members can submit independent motions and proposals on everything the Riksdag can decide on during a few weeks.
A motion can contain one or several proposals, known as requests. The number of requests submitted this year is also higher than last year – 11,022 this year compared to 2023, when 9,566 requests were submitted.
When a motion has been received by the Riksdag, it is submitted to the Riksdag committee or committees responsible for the area. The committee then reviews the motion and proposes what the Riksdag should decide. Many committees start this work in the spring, and subsequently the Riksdag makes a decision.
