When does the winter tire requirement apply?

Between December 1st and March 31st, it is mandatory to use winter tires if there are winter road conditions. The ban on studded tires applies from April 16th to September 30th. Non-studded friction tires can be used year-round.

Definition of winter road conditions

Good to know: there is only a requirement for winter tires if there are winter road conditions. Snow, ice, slush, and frost on any part of the road or roadside count as winter road conditions. However, you can almost always assume that there are winter road conditions in Sweden during the period when winter tires are required, especially in the northern parts of Sweden.

Requirements for winter tires

Studded and non-studded friction tires are considered winter tires. You cannot mix both types of tires.

Exceptions

If the car is on its way to an inspection or is older than 30 years, there is an exception to the winter tire requirement. This exception does not apply to foreign vehicles, so even those traveling to Sweden with a foreign vehicle must have winter tires.

Requirements for tire tread depth

Winter tire tread depth requirements is at least 3mm for cars and vehicles up to 3.5 tons.

Ban on studded tires in certain areas

In larger Swedish cities like Stockholm and Gothenburg, it is prohibited to use studded tires in certain areas. If you do, you may face a fine of 1,000 SEK.
