The USA's former president – also the presidential candidate for the Republicans in this year's presidential election – Donald Trump is urging evangelical Christians to vote for him in November.
Trump has created a loyal following among the Christian right in the USA by promising and delivering on some of their top priorities. Among other things, he has appointed conservative judges to the Supreme Court, which led to the federal abortion law being overturned.
Evangelicals and Christians do not vote to the extent they should, said Trump to hundreds of supporters at a meeting in Washington.
They go to church every Sunday, but they do not vote, he continued, half-jokingly, adding that they do not need to vote in four years, since Trump cannot run for the presidency in 2028.
Despite the presidential candidate in question rarely being seen in church himself, evangelical voters were crucial for him both in the 2016 election when he won and in the 2020 election when he was voted out. According to a survey conducted by the think tank Pew Research Centre, a clear majority of white evangelical Christians voted for Trump.
