There were several reasons behind the death in Mexico linked to the first known case of H5N2 bird flu in a human, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
According to Mexican health authorities, the 59-year-old man had a chronic kidney disease, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure. He had been bedridden for three weeks before he deteriorated on April 17, with symptoms including fever, shortness of breath, and diarrhea. A week later, he was admitted to the hospital, and he died the same day.
The man was tested for the flu and other viruses, and H5N2 was detected, according to Lindmeier.
No further cases of human infection have been found in connection with the death.
WHO estimates the risk to the general public as low.
