A new milestone has been reached in human history.

The total volume of fish, crabs, mussels, and other aquatic animals harvested through cultivation now exceeds the amount caught in the wild, according to a UN report.

The global catch and harvest totaled 185 million tons in 2022, according to the report released by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN.

Of this, cultivated volumes accounted for 94.4 million tons, which corresponds to 51% of the total production.

The total volume caught in the wild decreased from 91.6 million tons in 2021 to 91 million tons in 2022.

The development has been expected in light of the stagnation of fishing over the past three decades, primarily due to natural limitations.

Sustainability in wild fishing remains a cause for concern, according to the report. The proportion of marine stocks fished within biologically sustainable levels was 62.3% in 2021.

"Urgent measures are required to accelerate the conservation and rebuilding of fish stocks," the report states.
