Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyj emphasizes that his war-torn country needs a "just peace", during a meeting with Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

We appreciate that your visit takes place right after Hungary has taken over the EU presidency. It is a clear indication of our common European priorities and how important it is to achieve a just peace in Ukraine, says Zelenskyj at a press conference in Kiev.

He also stresses that Europe must continue its military support to Ukraine.

The Hungarian Prime Minister calls for a ceasefire.

I asked the President (Zelenskyj) to consider whether a rapid ceasefire could facilitate peace talks, says Orbán at the press conference.

The visit to Ukraine is Orbán's first since the Russian full-scale invasion in 2022.

Orbán has opposed several EU decisions on money, weapons, and other forms of support to Ukraine – as well as starting negotiations on EU membership with Kiev. The Hungarian Prime Minister is generally seen as Russia's best friend in the EU.

Orbán claims that Ukraine discriminates against the Hungarian minority in Ukraine and that support to Ukraine prolongs an unnecessary war.
