China Warns of Countermeasures if EU Imposes Tariffs on Chinese Electric Cars.

Peking wants to resolve disputes in trade through dialogue rather than tariffs to avoid a trade war, according to Trade Minister Wang Wentao.

"If the EU does not live up to what it says it will do and continues to hinder Chinese companies, China will take all necessary measures to clearly safeguard the legitimate interests of Chinese companies," Wang Wentao said in a statement.

The EU is investigating a range of Chinese products, including electric cars, trains, and equipment for solar installations, following suspicions of price dumping and unfair state subsidies.

The EU will inform Chinese electric car manufacturers that tariffs will be imposed and how high they will be by early June and can take effect as early as July.

China has already launched anti-dumping investigations into European spirits in response to the EU's investigations. It is believed to be targeting French cognac. It has also flagged tariffs on European car brands and pork.
