Foreign travel increased by two percent and domestic travel decreased by three percent in September, compared to the same month last year. This is evident from the statistics of the state-owned airport operator Swedavia.
Swedavia operates the ten largest airports in Sweden. Looking at individual airports, the increase in foreign travel was higher than average, with a six percent increase for Arlanda and five percent for Landvetter.
At the same time as domestic travel decreased overall, increases can be seen for Kiruna and Ronneby. Swedavia is pushing to gather air traffic in the Stockholm area at Arlanda, especially after the airline BRA's announcement that it will leave Bromma and move to Arlanda in December. This means that most of the traffic at Bromma will disappear.
"As domestic traffic, which has had a weak development over several years, is now also being gathered at Arlanda, this is natural. A strong Arlanda is important both from an accessibility perspective and for Swedish competitiveness," says Jonas Abrahamsson, Swedavia's CEO and Group President in a press release.
Air travel at the ten airports is now up to 82 percent of pre-pandemic levels. At Arlanda, the corresponding figure is around 90 percent.
