Swedish criminal gangs have sent people to Iceland to commit crimes. This is according to Iceland's Minister of Justice, Gudrún Hafsteinsdóttir, in an interview with Danish TV2.

One such example is an attack directed at a police officer, whose car was set on fire in August last year – an act allegedly carried out on the orders of a Swedish gang.

We have confirmed information about a group of people who came here for this purpose, says Runólfur Thórhallsson at the Icelandic police's analysis unit to the newspaper Morgunbladid, referring to the car arson.

The gang in question is, according to Thórhallsson, based in the Kronogården area in Trollhättan. It is claimed to be one of several foreign gangs trying to gain a foothold on the North Atlantic island nation with nearly 400,000 inhabitants.

Minister of Justice Gudrún Hafsteinsdóttir said over the weekend to the public service company Rúv that they will tighten border controls.
